Lakes

There are thousands of lakes in the world. Some of them are big, others not. They differ from seas by their smaller size and depth. Lakes have sweet water that is why it is possible to drink its water. However there are several lakes with salt waters and they are sometimes considered to be seas and not lakes.

The biggest and the deepest lake of the world is the Lake Baikal that is situated in Siberia in Russia. It is a resort for holiday-makers, and there is a great number of health centres. People use the waters of the lake to treat different diseases.

The United States of America is known for its five Great Lakes situated in the north of the USA on the boarder with Canada. These lakes are the Huron, the Ontario, the Michigan, the Eerie, and the Superior. These lakes are famous all over the world. The Lake Superior is the cleanest and the biggest of these five lakes.

Lakes play an important role in the cycle of nature. They regulate the flowing off the rivers. The chemical and physical reactions take place in lakes of the world. Big lakes influence the climate of the nearest zones because of its warm waters. Lakes also regulate climate decreasing the changes in temperature and weather. In other words they keep climate stable.

Lakes are very important for wild life. As most of them are ponds for animals. It also influences the fauna of the nearest areas. Lakes also dry out, producing influence on the relief of the area. It may turn into pond and if it is overgrown with plants it turns into lands.

Lakes are not so big as seas, that is why they don't have any transporting importance. Their main significance is the healing effects of waters of some lakes. There are lakes according to which scientists disagree. Till nowadays they can't say exactly whether these lakes are seas or lakes.
